七夕絵どうろうまつり

 

ー深草少将の百夜通い/The Legend of the One Hundred Nightly Visitsー

深草は百夜通ひの死にて遂げ 愛は留まり現世(うつしよ）越ゆる

秋田県湯沢市では8月5日から7日まで七夕絵どうろうまつりが開かれました。写真は今年の絵どうろうではありません。20年くらい前に同祭りを訪れた際に撮りました。小野小町に恋した深草少将の百代通いを題材に絵を描いています。小野小町と深草少将の淡い藤色の衣装が夏の夜空に映え、幻想的な色調で儚い恋を物語っていました。

平安時代の絶世の美女と言われ歌人であった小野小町は一説に湯沢市小野の出身といわれています。美しく成長した小町は都に上り、その美貌故に多くの男性の求愛を得ましたが、その中の一人に深草少将がいました。

二人のあいだには百夜通いという悲恋伝説があります。深草少将は絶世の美女といわれている小野小町をとても愛し求愛したのですが、小野小町はなかなかその愛を遂げさせてくれませんでした。そして、深草の思いを諦めさせようと「私のもとへ百夜通ったなら、あなたの意のままになりましょう」と告げます。言われたとおり、深草は小町のもとに通い続けますが、九十九日目の（嵐の）夜、小野小町のもとへと通う途中、力尽き深草はそれ以上歩くことができず倒れてしまい、息絶えてしまいます。小野小町は彼の死を悲しみ、その後、生涯悩み続けたといわれています。

掲載した短歌はこの悲恋を七夕の絵灯籠を見ながら、詠んだうちの1首です。初期作品です。

The Tanabata Painted Lantern Festival (Tanabata E-dōrō Matsuri) was held in Yuzawa City, Akita Prefecture, from August 5 to 7. I took these photos about two decades ago when I visited the festival.

One lantern depicts Ono no Komachi—a famous 9th-century waka poet said to have been born in Yuzawa—and the other shows Major General Fukakusa, a court nobleman.

Deeply enamored with Komachi's beauty, Fukakusa courted her continuously. To test his devotion, Komachi told him, "If you visit my residence every night for one hundred nights, I shall accept your love."

Fukakusa faithfully made the journey night after night. However, on the ninety-ninth night—caught in a harsh storm—he collapsed from total exhaustion and passed away just short of his goal. Overwhelmed by grief, Komachi is said to have mourned his passing for the rest of her life.

Viewing these glowing painted lanterns—their soft lilac and white hues capturing the fleeting, tragic beauty of the lovers—inspired me to compose tanka poems, one of which I have shared above: My early tanka.
