Title <BETWEEN THE SHADOW AND THE SOUL>
— A Sequence of Three Tanka—
These poems are Japanese traditional “Tanka”
written in classical one-line style and translated into a five lines style in English.
:
肉朽ちて生のカオスに還りしも魂（たま）の彼岸に醒めにけるかな
:
though the body dies,
returning to chaos of particles—
still the soul may awaken
across the eternal threshold
on the far shore of being
:
カラスしき啼く橋のうへ霧のなか誰(た)が霊魂(たましひ)の昇りゆくやも
:
crows calling above
a mist-veiled bridge—whose anima
rises in the fog?
a silent farewell hidden
in the breath between two worlds
:
ぬばたまの喪色にしづむ薔薇一輪あやしの底ゆ吉凶語る
:
a single rose
in pitch-black mourning hue
speaks of
good or ill fortune
from the deepest mystery
